smfr therapy:

What is it?

Self MyoFascial Release Therapy is self-care therapy, which offers a way of helping yourself and looking after yourself. It builds on key concepts of self-care derived from the latest scientific findings on myofascial release and general rehabilitation practices. It is a process of re-integrating the whole body to restore functional movement. In SMFRTherapy we work with an integrative approach of normal movement, exercise and enhancing the sense of self called interoception.

Interoception

Interoception is the awareness of what is going on in your body so that you can identify any residual unnecessary tension and unconscious habitual holding and bracing patterns. Building up your interoceptive awareness has showed to alleviate stress and anxiety hence restoring your sense of well-being.

What does it help with?

SMFRTherapy has been shown to increase joint range of movement, to alleviate pain, to improve proprioception and it helps with reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) post-exercise. It also increases the sense of self. SMFRTherapy is built on biotensegrity model, where there needs to be balance in the body between tension and compression of muscles, soft tissue and bones.

What tools do we use?

We use 3 different tools: a foam roller, soft ball and a peanut roller. It is a slow and softening approach that helps to gain a greater sense of wellbeing.

SMFRTherapy tools:

-a foam roller, around 15 cm in diameter, 90 cm long

-a soft ball 10-12cm in diameter

-peanut roller (alternatively use 2 tennis balls in a sock)
